Chess 960, or Fischer Random Chess, is a chess variant in which the back row is randomized at the start. There are two constraints to the initial game state:
- The King is placed on a square between the rooks
- The Bishops are placed on different colors
These constraints result in 960 possibilities for the starting state.
Aside from the initial conditions, there are modified rules for castling for which I'll refer you to the Wikipedia Page.
